چکیده

The titration alkalinity and total carbon dioxide concentration data obtained during the GEOSECS Expeditions, 1972-1977, in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans have been summarized. The oceans have been divided into seven oceanic regions, and the mean vertical distributions of the alkalinity and total CO2 concentration have been computed. In addition, the vertical distributions of these quantities as well as salinity and potential temperature for the mean world ocean have been computed using the regional mean values. Based upon these values, the total CO2 content of the world oceans has been estimated to be 3.16XlOI2 MC02. The CO] = ion concentration at the in situ temperature and pressure conditions have been computed using the alkalinity and total CO2 data. The regional mean vertical profiles for the CO] = ion in seawater are presented and discussed.

Adaptation of the Cyanobacterium fischerella sp. ISC 107 to the combined effects of pH and carbon dioxide concentration. Mahboobeh Rajabnasab1, Ramezan Ali Khavari-nejad1*, Shademan Shokravi2 and Taher Nejadsattari1

The aim of this study was to investigate the adaptation of the cyanobacterium Fischerella sp. ISC 107to combined effects of carbon dioxide concentration, acidic and alkalinity. Axenic strain was incubated in BG0-11 medium. Carbon dioxide treatments were limited and relatively non-limited. Acidic (pH 5), neutral (pH7), and alkaline (pH 9) conditions were employed in each treatment. Survival, gro...

The Inorganic Carbon System and Nutrient Cycling in the Equatorial North Pacific: A study of the interactions between oceanographic features and seawater chemistry

The world’s oceans are an extremely important component of the global carbon cycle. As anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions become a growing concern, increasing our understanding of the oceanic carbon system will be a key factor in projecting the affects of global climate change and the ability of the oceans to regulate increases in atmospheric CO2. Extensive progress in this area has been ma...

Assessing possible consequences of ocean liming on ocean pH, atmospheric CO2 concentration and associated costs

More than 380 Pg of carbon have been released by human activities from fossil fuel combustion and cement manufacturing since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. This carbon release has caused atmospheric CO2 levels to increase by ∼100 ppmv compared to the highest interglacial value of the last ∼800,000 years. Net uptake of carbon by the oceans has caused the surface ocean pH to drop by ...

Impact of anthropogenic CO2 on the CaCO3 system in the oceans.

Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations over the past two centuries have led to greater CO2 uptake by the oceans. This acidification process has changed the saturation state of the oceans with respect to calcium carbonate (CaCO3) particles. Here we estimate the in situ CaCO3 dissolution rates for the global oceans from total alkalinity and chlorofluorocarbon data, and we also dis...
